On June 7, 1978, Cheryl and Martin were in Houston on a TxDHS training assignment. Our neighbor, who was a Chaplain for the El Paso Police Dept. was looking after Brandy (above) and Kelly. As they'd tried to run off a couple of times, Brandy was on a long lead so she could move around. Unfortunately she climbed up on the 2 story dog house, tried to jump over the fence and accidentally hung herself. Incredibly hard on Kelly and us, as well as the Pastor. Kelly below.

A month later Kelly ran away and was gone several days. When we found her, it turned out she was pregnant.

Mary Ann and Martin worked for the El Paso DHS region training unit. A good friendship developed. One weekend Mary Ann went to her cabin in New Mexico for the weekend. When she didn't arrive first thing Monday morning at the office, Luis (another friend and co-worker) became concerned about Mary Ann's dog. She'd left the dog with plenty of food and water for the weekend, however, we thought we'd better go check on him. Arriving at her house, we looked through the garage window and it looked like the dogs water bowl was empty. (cont'd)

So we went to a grocery store and bought some packets of dog food, crumpled it up and threw it under the garage door. Thinking the dog might also need water, we turned on the hose and ran water under the garage door. When we returned to work, Mary Ann was there. It turned out we'd gone to the wrong house. I'm sure that dog had a good story when their masters returned. Lucky for Luis and I, the neighbors hadn't called the police.

Just several months after moving to El Paso, Martin was offered and took a Training job with TxDHS in Austin (which is what he'd been working toward since 1968).

Martin continued work for the TxDHS as a Child Protective Services and Management trainer

Later he became Chief of the data section which liaisoned with regional staff.

Billie O'Dowdy and Sylvia were in Austin in December 1978 making a child placement. Martin had just moved to Austin from El Paso.

After renting a bug infested apartment on Guadalupe in Austin, a DHS investigator rented her home on Deadwood to Martin

Martin was assigned to TxDHS Disaster Assistance Training and when the Witchita Falls tornado occurred, Martin went to document the disaster and subsequent training. On 4/13/79 he shot this cover photo for the TxDHS "WE" magazine from a National Guard helicopter.

After the 4/11/1979 Witchita Falls tornado TxDHS staff were housed at Sheppard AFB. Staff including Sylvia were pulled from all over the State to manage the disaster assistance application.

01/03/1979 Martin attended Harry Chapin's concert at Armadillo World Headquarters and later on April 10, '79 at the Austin Paramount Theater.

First Austin on-location job upon moving company to Austin was at St. David's Episcopal Church recording Mendelssohn's Elijah.. Darryl Marler (below) helped with several Phantom recordings during this period.

Martin recorded recitals at UT

Martin, while working for the State, began building Highland Sound/Phantom Productions recording business in Austin. Cheryl stayed in El Paso to sell our home and continued working for Child Protective Services while working on a transfer to Austin.

Martin began working with Peter Butcher, a British music producer. They both were on the Board of NGP. New generations productions staff in Austin Custom Records offices.

Austin Custom Records where Martin worked as Chief Engineer while still working for TxDHS. Most often that state job happened during the day and in the evening and weekends Martin would complete the recording work. That usually fit with the musicians schedules as well.

There was no glass in the window between the control room and the sound recording rooms. Engineer had to use headphones

Peter (standing center above) and Martin began working with James Mikulinka with the band Lucky Stripes. Cheryl and Martin met James when he was hosting an open house on Sun Vista in Austin. We bought the home.

Kelly had 13 pups and lost 5. Cheryl was in the hospital and our vet allowed Kelly and her pups to stay at their clinic.
