These pages were initially created to transfer photos from traditional scrapbooks to the internet in order to both preserve and make the pictures and history available to family and friends. It has become more extensive than I intended. However, I see it as a way to save the details before they slip away.

MartinTheophilusDocACC Commercial Music Tech Program creationOn April 6, 1987 I wrote to local Austin recording studios asking if they would respond to a survey regarding the proposed ACC Commercial Music program. Here is a pdf with the recording studio replies.

I also wrote to other schools in the country that looked to be successful. Here is a pdf of their replies, plus replies received later from schools, individuals and organizations.

Here are some more letters of support for the ACC Commercial Music program. Also Ernie Gammage included the ACC proposed Music Business Program plan in the July Texas Music Association Bulletin.

MartinTheophilusDocACC Commercial Music Tech Program creationIn July/August of 1987 ACC sent out a survey to the Austin Community to gauge support for a Music Business Technology Associate degree program. Here are the compiled responses and Austin Community Colleges' Draft Resolution of Support.MartinTheophilusDocACC Commercial Music Tech Program creation

Austin Community College allowed us to form an ad-hoc "support/planning" group to move the Commercial Music Program forward. As with any large organization, there were lots of folks to include and processes that were required.

On August 8,1987, I released a message to the support group outlining the programs' status. At that time, the persons who were participating were:

  • Martin Theophilus - Phantom Productions, Inc. (Chairman initially, then responsibility was shared)
  • Ernie Gammage (Austin Music Industry)
  • Christine Theophilus (Phantom Productions, Inc/Board Member, Austin Lawyers & Accountants for the Arts)
  • John Robert Hood (Bass Performing Arts Center)
  • Gilbert Martinez (ACC Board)
  • Ted Miller (Office of the Governor)

Splash from the past: Who remembers Austin’s Aqua Fest?
Michael Barnes

In 1962, the marquee act for the first very Austin Aqua Festival, long before the advent of South by Southwest (1987) or the Austin City Limits Music Festival (2002), was Art Linkletter.  That a mild-mannered daytime TV host — whose tag line was, “Kids say the darnedest things” — starred at the premiere of this onetime Austin mega-fest suggests that the city was indeed quite a different place almost 60 years ago.

Sponsored by the Austin Chamber of Commerce, early Aqua Fests — scheduled during the hottest part of the summer, when business activity slowed down, kids needed distraction and college students and legislators were out of town — centered on watery events for the entire family. These included parades down Congress Avenue and on Town Lake, boating races and skiing showcases, beauty contests and decorated floats, community games and fishing contests, wandering entertainers and craft sellers, food booths and nightly concerts.

082787 England - Anthony arrived in Suffolk

Anthony, Martin & Chris in UK

08/31/87 Chris and Martin drove Anthony to London and left car at Grays.  Went to Lime Tree Hotel. Caught underground to Piccadilly Circus. Met up with Anthony and spent time with Chris' Mum, Sheila, Peter and Lynn • a few video clips

As Chris' home was in the UK, the Director of Phantom (Chris and Martin) decided to try promoting Deborah and Ron to record companies and publishers in England. In an effort to be unique, Phantom produced videos on the band, then took NTSC (the US video standard) equipment to England. What this created was an opportunity to actually play and let the music companies see the band performing. It worked and we were able to play the video for both Island Records and Chelsea Music (publishers of "Curiosity Killed the Cat.").

When we were asked to leave the tape, they were told that it was on NTSC, not PAL (the UK video standard). Chelsea Music's Eddie Levy asked what Phantom got out of a deal if we found interest in the UK. Chris and Martin said "nothing" as Deborah and Ron are friends. The publisher said that Phantom's representation was so good, we should negotiate a management contract.

09/01/87 Chris & Martin made video presentation to Island Records in London

On the fight home Chris and Martin discussed ways to approach Deborah and Ron with a business proposition. As it turned out Deborah and Ron had been having the same thought. So when they met at the Austin airport, everyone turned out to be on the same page and Phantom's artist management services were launched.
