On 04/11/86 Dad sold his 40 year old Shopper's Guide Press business to Art and Linda Merrihew. When Dad passed away, Chris and Martin took over ownership of the building leasing it to Art and Linda. The Merrihews eventually moved Shopper's Guide Press to downtown Alpine and several years later retired. The building went through several occupants and today is owned by the Alpine Humane Society, Thrift Store and Cattery.

The founding of the Austin Community College Commercial Music Management degree program • view video
In mid 1986 I received the 1986 MIX magazine Education Directory for the Central US including Texas. It surprised me that there were no music business tech schools in Austin listed in the directory. My wife Chris and I began talking with folks we worked with in the Austin music community. We confirmed there were no schools offering the business of music in the Austin, Texas area. Those courses would include legal aspects of the music industry, publishing, staging, production, marketing and other essential resources, plus the basics of recording technology. We began exploring the possibility that some Austin area college or university might be interested in the creation of such a program.
I met with both the music and business departments at the University of Texas, St Edwards University, Concordia University and San Marcos' Texas State University. Folks said the idea was interesting, however their schedules were full and they passed.
I then sent a letter to ACC President Dan Angel describing our interest in creating the program. Dr. Angel connected me with ACC staff.
At that time I was serving on the Austin Community College's Business Management Advisory Committee as Chairman of the Texas Agency Human Resource Development Network. The ACC Business Advisory Committee is composed of Texas Agency representatives and Austin's larger private employers (TI, IBM, UT) to help identify educational needs and recommend programs to be provided by ACC. So I mentioned the music business program proposal at the next meeting of the ACC Business Advisory Committee. I asked if they thought the program would be a viable option for ACC. It was unanimously recommended and they asked for me to follow-up with more specifics.
To better support this proposal I began to contact and gather information from the existing Texas schools who had active commercial music programs. I wanted to know how they created their programs, their level of success and any information they were willing to share. I travelled to Houston, Waco, Dallas, Levelland and El Paso. All the programs seemed to be doing well and were often placing students into jobs before they graduated.
On July 28, 1986 I sent a proposed outline based on my visits to those Texas schools. I prepared a formal overview and presented it to the ACC Business Management Advisory Committee on October 29, 1986, The group believed the program would best be served by locating it in the Business department of ACC. This approval resulted in the following questionnaire. The program eventually ended up in the Music area headed by David Jones.

Chris'
roots were in England. Also, Peter Butcher felt the response to the new musicians
we were working with was much more helpful from the European record companies
and publishers. So we kept pitching new material that direction. On our
1986 trip back to Chris' home, we decided to try to pitch some of the artists
we were working with. We came up with an idea to take US NTSC music videos
we produced and see if we could show the material in the UK (where PAL is
the standard video format) It greatly exceeded our expectations and we were
able to actually meet with the International Rep at Island Records (it was
pretty neat to sit in the waiting room and see all the mailed demos from
artists all over the world). Our pitch was that we couldn't leave the NTSC
videos for the record company to look at later, so they would need to look
at them now...AND THEY DID! - view video of Island, creole and Burne Music (Curiosity Killed the Cat) London, England

One
publisher (Chelsea Music (publishers of "Curiosity Killed the Cat."),
asked
what Phantom got out of a deal if we found interest in the UK. Chris and
Martin said "nothing" as the musicians were friends. The publisher
said that Phantom's representation was so good, we should negotiate a management
contract. He also recommended that we begin attending Midem, the International Music conference in Cannes, France. Deborah and Ron picked us up from the Austin Airport. They asked us about management. Thus began Phantom's management (investor) stint. Chris would
later move Phantom from providing resources to new artists to serious booking
contracts that brought income to the artist and Phantom. Some of the artists we originally managed toured Russia with the TIES project. view video clip

Martin & Chris in El Paso while Dad in hospital 1986
12/01/86 Martin & Chris took Ollie to El Paso to have surgery to repair a hole in his heart that was causing serious health problems. The surgery after Thanksgiving was successful, however Ollie experienced a stroke the next day at which time he lost his ability to speak. In a horrendous situation a "cooling bed" that was being used to stabilize his temperature, malfunctioned. Ollie received 3rd degree burns and was unable to let the nursing staff know. Martin stayed with Ollie all the time, Chris came and stayed as often as she could and Peggy & John and other family members and friends from Alpine visited. Ollie passed away the morning of New Years Day, January 1, 1987. He would have turned 70 in April. more photos
