These pages were initially created to transfer photos from traditional scrapbooks to the internet in order to both preserve and make the pictures and history available to family and friends. It has become more extensive than I intended. However, I see it as a way to save the details before they slip away.

1979

In 1979, Martin was working in Austin, Texas at 5350 Burnet Road for the Texas Department of Human Resources as a Staff Development Specialist. He had joined the TxDHS in 1968. After being sent to Austin for a month of training in 1969, his goal became to move to Austin and build his recording business in the center of Texas music. He chose to continue with TxDHS for the salary and health insurance, but always looked for ways to transfer to Austin.

It only took 10 years. Now in Austin with a higher paying position, he was free to pursue his recording busines as well, with Cheryl's support. Cheryl was also employed by the TxDHS. It worked out well, because while still working 8 hours a day, 5days a week, hewould complete recording jobs in the evenings, wsekends, or take leave when necesssary from the State. It worked well! Martin's company was providing services to Austin's Austin Custom Records owned by Roy Pool, as well as generating recording jobs from ads and throughnetworking with Austin's music community.

After renting a bug infested apartment on Guadalupe on 11/30/78, Martin leased a house at 2106 Deadwood from DHS Investigator from 012/18/78 to 05/26/79.

Recording sessions were booked and the majority of the time Martin's custom van was used for on-location recordings. Jobs included bands of all kinds, churches and some corporate work.

Martin, while working for the State, continues building Highland Sound/Phantom Productions recording business in Austin.  Cheryl stayed in El Paso to sell our home and continued working for Child Protective Services while working on a transfer to Austin.

Before it closed in 1980 Martin attended Harry Chapin's concert at the Armadillo World Headquarters on 01/03/79.  Martin arrived early and sat on the front row  by Harry's son Josh. It was the first time Chapin performed his new song "Sequel" which he'd just completed. Cheryl was still in El Paso.

On 04/01/79 James Mikukenka (Bass player, Realtor and /Print Shop Foreman for the Austin American Statesman) was sitting in the open house Cheryl and Chris bought. It was at 6002 Sun Vista in Austin. The home wasn't completed, so interior carpet, paint a fixtures were chosen by Cheryl and Martin. James was in a band called Shammy and Peter and Martin began working with the band. James later found Chris and Martin's home west of Oak Hill. He has been a long time friend.

05/26/79 Moved from Deadwood to Sun Vista. During move, Martin's van was rear ended at Ben White and Congress by large semi truck that couldn't stop in rain.  It knocked the van into the intersection, but luckily didn't hit any cross traffic. The spare tire mounted on back door saved damage

When Martin moved to Austin, he continued the on-location audio recording.  However, he also worked for the State of Texas Dept. of Terry Lickona, producer , Austin City LimitsHuman Services as a producer of training.  In that role he had the occasion to work with the DHS Media staff where he began producing video.  His video production mentor was Bruce Scafe, who was the original producer of Austin City Limits.  Bruce left Austin City Limits after the first season and Terry Lickona, who was originally an intern took over.  Bruce produced the video newsmagazine for DHS.
