Family & Friends

These pages were initially created to transfer photos from traditional scrapbooks to the internet in order to both preserve and make the pictures and history available to family and friends. It has become more extensive than I intended. However, I see it as a way to save the details before they slip away.

1969/1970 Alpine Part 1 • video

After Carol and I were married in 1967, we lived in an apartment behind the Perryman's home on Lockhart Street  in Alpine, Texas. Carl Williams left his Brewster County Sheriff's position to work for the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Education and Standards the beginning of 1970. Carl, Alice,Renee and Michael moved to Midland. Carol and I bought Carl and Alice's home (which we later sold to Peggy and Tom Karvonen when we moved to Midland). Also clips of Carol's family and our two German Shepherds Baron and Tonya. Shots of Alpine hail storm in 1967.

Carol received her masters. Darryl Mueller and Tino Acosta with whom Martin worked were also in the video. At the end of the video is the scene of a house fire between Balmorphea and Pecos. Carol and I were in the process of moving to Midland when we came across the fire and called the fire departments. The house was already fully engulfed and we were told it had been abandoned. video

Also driving along the River Road and going by Lupe Hernandez's old home.

During our Sul Ross college years, Carol and I worked for the Brewster County Communications and came to know all the law enforcement personnel and families. Carl Williams was my Boy Scout leader when he was a DPS officer and then Brewster County Sheriff. We watched Carl and his wife Alice raise Michael and Ranee. Carl's Chief Deputy was George Jones. George and his wife Barbara lived in the Brewster County jail raising their two sons Jerry and Jimbo. We would often watch football games with them and other officers on Sunday. We visited Barbara and George when they were vacationing in Cloudcroft. George was a narcotics officer for DPS and we also visited them in Uvalde where George was stationed for awhile.

I began working for the State DHS in 1968, We moved to Midland/Odessa in 1970 for Carol's job at Midland High School. I transferred to DHS in Odessa and ended up in Child Protective Services in the Ector County County Courthouse. Carol was teaching in Midland and became friends with Jackie Carter another Midland HS Teacher. Jackie's husband Bruce was serving in Viet Nam. She shared what Carol told her about my CPS job and Bruce thought that was something he'd like to do when he left the army. I was promoted to a financial supervisor in 1971and Bruce ended up applying for and getting my old job. Shortly thereafter I was able to transfer back to the Ector County CPS unit as supervisor, so Bruce and I ended up working together for the next 5 years. Bruce was a motocross rider and even competed successfully in Georgia. Bruce convinced Me to begin riding, so I purchase a Yamaha 125. Bruce said he'd teach me to ride by "chasing me and run over me if he could catch me. Jackie and Carol also bought cycles. Odessa had a fairly nice track south of town and then west of Odessa there were endless oil field roads and pits that provided great riding locations. Another CPS person, Fran Wilson, also bought a cycle and joined us. Fran, Bruce and I also rode in Big Springs and in the Big Bend area around Study Butte, and Candelaria. I recall one morning when it was sleeting heavily and Bruce showed up at my home with his cycle loaded and said "let's go ride." We did, out in the oil fields. We also rode at the Monahans Sand Hills. Cheryl also bought a Yamaha and rode around Odessa and in the Big Bend.

1969 Midland/Odessa Baron and Tonya • video

In 1969 Carol completed her Masters at Sul Ross and was offered a Senior English teaching position at Midland High School. Carol and Martin sold Carl Williams' home in Alpine to His Sister Peggy and Tom Karvonen. C&M moved to Midland and rented a home. With Martin's Mom, they met Martin's Grandmother returning from Scotland at the Midland airport.

Martin applied to the Midland Police Department, but was turned down due to his lost kidney liability. So Martin went back to work for the TDHS in Odessa, working for Mr. Simmons, his previous supervisor when he began with TDHS in Alpine. Shortly thereafter, Martin was offered a Child Protective Services job in Odessa. To meet the State legal requirement at the time that you had to be a resident of a county to file legal petitions for custody, Carol and Martin built a home in Odessa using Wylie Brown. These scenes are from the rented home in Midland and building the home in Odessa. Baron and Tonya were our constant companions. Their puppies were fun!

Ector County Children's Services to TxDHS Training Center Midland, Texas • 1970 to 1977

When Martin graduated from Sul Ross with a Music Degree, he turned down his first band directing contract with Fort Davis as they were going to disband the music program. So Martin went to work as a commissioned State Police Officer for the newly created Sul Ross Campus Security department, working mostly nights.

Beginning Dec 1968, Martin worked for DPW as a Food Stamp Social Worker, interviewing and certifying eligible families for assistance.  His territory included Brewster, Jeff Davis and Presidio Counties.

Due to the County funding problem, Martin found a temporary job with the Texas Department of Transportation in Alpine. There he interpolated survey data on the road bed between Alpine and Ft. Davis. This was while Carol was completing her Masters at Sul Ross.

Martin was sent to Austin for the month of August, 1969 for orientation.

Carol was able to stay in Austin for part of the time while till working on her Masters degree. Martin found the Austin music scene to be where he wanted to be. However it took 10 long years to get there while working for the State.

When Martin rejoined Texas DPW, he was assigned to Marfa and worked out of an office picture of Lupe Hernandez, Marfa, Texasbehind the JP courtroom in the Presidio County Courthouse.  His co-workers were Lupe Hernandez (pic right) whose family lived along the Big Bend River Road.  Her family would alternately host folks passing by that include the US Cavalry, Poncho Villa and the Mexican army.  View movie from that area taken in 1969.

Martin's other co-worker was Georgia Kahl whose husband was Fritz Kahl, a pilot (first stationed at the Marfa Army Air Base during WW II, who was instrumental in bringing the glider events to the area.  More about Marfa, Texas

The Child Welfare Worker for the Big Bend area was Teda Neil

The home was later sold to Martin's sister Peggy and her husband Tom.

At the end of this video is the scene of a house fire between Balmorphea and Pecos. Carol and I were in the process of moving to Midland when we came across the fire and called the fire departments. The house was already fully engulfed and we were told it had been abandoned. video

Carol and Martin moved to Midland, TX September 1970 where Carol became and English teacher at Midland High School. Martin had hoped to work for the Midland Police Dept (where Carl Williams had arranged an interview), or the Texas DPS. Both turned martin down due to his one kidney risk, so he re-joined the Tx DHS.

In late 1970, Martin was able to join the County Child Welfare staff as a State social worker.  This was a unique opportunity, as it involved child abuse & neglect investigation, working with families and the Juvenile Court.

When Carol and Martin moved to Odessa in 1970 Martin was given permission to continue using law enforcement communications in his personal cars by the Ector County Sheriff's Department. The radio became essential in Martin's Child Protective Service work for the State of Texas.

In 1978 Martin acquired Teac equipment for Phantom Productions, Inc.

With this equipment Martin began completing on location albums around Texas for Austin Custom Records

Due to all the club noise, Martin asked this Odessa band if he could use their equipment truck for isolation in mixing the live recording.

The success of that set-up resulted in Phantom's creating the van to below a year later in El Paso.

In 1978 Martin along with several TxDHS CPS Supervisors were promoted to State Education Training Specialists and moved to the new TxDHS training facility in Midland.  This is Martin's office.

Martin was lucky to transfer in that position to El Paso on March 8, 1978. El Paso was a regional headquarters and was another step to getting to Austin.

Martin had been assigned to a month long State orientation class in Austin in 1968.  He had worked to end up in Austin with its thriving music business ever since.

Interestingly, Don Abernathy with the State Office Training staff saw Martin's Odessa "7 years Child Protective Services" scrapbook at the Midland training center and encouraged Martin to apply for an Austin headquarters job, after he'd just transferred to El Paso. Martin accepted that Austin TxDHS headquarters job on December 1, 1978.
