Work History Part 4

All photos by Martin Theophilus

These pages were initially created to transfer photos from traditional scrapbooks to the internet in order to both preserve and make the pictures and history available to family and friends. It has become more extensive than I intended. However, I see it as a way to save the details before they slip away.

Martin worked for the Texas Center for Disability Studies from 1997 to 2000. UT TCDS then contracted with Chris and Martin's Phantom Productions, Inc. to provide those same services from 2000 to 2017 providing systems support and media production.

The TCDS (previously called the UAP) moved from the UT Education building to UT leased offces on Stone Lake. At that location the IT room was the only space available for Martin's editing equipment. UT said Martin's occupying that office meant TCDS would need to provide their own IT services. Martin became the IT person which helped his later work with Cortex Interactive. The TCDS staff was later moved to the UT Commons/J.J. Pickle Center on Burnet Road. Martin was officed across from the Texas Advanced Computing Center.

Thanks to a good friend Debby Kalk, Martin worked for Cortex Interactive as a Systems Manager and Video producer.  The job enable Chris and Martin to build there home. Unfortunately after 9/11, major contracts with Delta Airlines for International security and other training were placed on hold  causing Cortex to go out of business.  Some video work Martin worked on included Big Austin (view videos 1, 2, 3, 4), Delta AirlinesBalcones Springs Resort Virtual Reality for web site

Cortex Interactive Staff: Debby Kalk, Brenda Fondren, Katy Truitt, Martin Burke, Peter Leighton, Ivickza Sanchez, ...

Chris and Martin have enjoyed seeing Martin Burke (who also worked at Cortex) in numerous wonderful Austin plays.

June 2021 Work Update synopsis:

As work  on the Museum of Magnetic Sound Recording progresses, Chris retired booking entertainment for David Perkoff Music December 31, 2018 (over 25 years). Martin provided media services to the University of Texas at Austin' Texas Center for Disability Studies until the end of June, 2016. This included developing their new Drupal web site and several media jobs including a major video shoot in San Antonio for the Arc of Texas and TCDS. After the UT contract (initiated in 2002) came to an unexpected end, Phantom was asked to create a new "mobile friendly Drupal 8 website for the Texas Project FIRST. This was an ongoing contract (since 2002 and ending 2019) with the Family to Family Network of Houston. Additionally, Phantom continues to manage the web contract, also initiated in 2002 with the EveryhildTexas non-profit.

Chris continues to enjoy her horsey endeavors. Unfortunately she's lost both of her long time horses Dancer , KD and Taffie. Margarita is her current horse.

Martin's personal DPS carAs mentioned earlier, Martin was exposed to very positive influences in law enforcement from his Boy Scout leader Tx DPS Officer Carl Williams, who later became Sheriff of Brewster County and later was an initial member of the then new (1969) Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Education and Standards. Martin worked for several years as a law enforcement dispatcher for Brewster County Communications while attending Sul Ross State College and earning a degree in Music. When his first Band Director's position was changed to A Texas History position, Martin declined the contract and went to work for Sul Ross as a State Police Officer in the newly created Campus Security operations around the State.

Shortly thereafter Martin took a job with the Texas DPW, travelling the tri-county region certifying recipients. When Martin's first wife Carol, graduated with a Masters degree from Sul Ross, she was accepted as a Midland High School English Teacher. With Carl Williams assistance, Martin applied to both the Texas DPS and the Midland Police Departments. They declined to employ Martin as a police officer due to his losing a kidney at age three, thus placing him at high risk (also had caused him to be 4F for the draft).

So Martin returned to the TxDPW, which was fortuitous as he was transferred into a new Child Protective Services position that was being integrated with the counties in Texas. Martin was assigned to the CPS Unit in the Ector County Courthouse where he began investigating CPS cases. The Ector County Sheriff's Dept. enabled Martin to continue using his Brewster County law enforcement radio which was a great asset. After two years, Martin was promoted to the CPS unit's Supervisory position, where he remained for 5 years and then was promoted again to a Training Director's position. Subsequently, Martin was promoted to the Austin Texas Department of Human Services Management Training Division and later became Chief of Services managing trainers around the State (right).

After married Chris in 1985, Martin and Chris continued with the TXDHS until Chris left in 1989 and Martin left in 1990 join Chris as they grew their recording and artist managementbusiness. After a couple of close significant management situations failed, artist management was not generating the expected results. During a Texas Music promotional trip to MIDEM in Cannes, France, some Canadian friends recommended we move to booking corporate entertainment. Chris began looking into corporate entertainment and formed a union with David Perkoff Music. During this transition, Martin provided media support. As health insurance costs increased, Martin returned to State employment to recoup his retirement which then provided health insurance coverage. The UT TCDS hired Martin as a Media Producer. After completing the 3 years necessary to secure the State retirement, Martin left UT. The UT TCDS Director asked Martin to continue part time, however he preferred not to due to the restrictions of time and leave. A contract between UT and Phantom Productions, Inc. was initiated in 2000 and lasted until 2016

During the 2000 period, Martin also agreed to work part time and then full time for Cortex Interactive, which was co-owned by a friend Debby Kalk. Martin was hired as the IT and Media person. He had not intended to learn IT, however previously UT did not have office space for Martin's UT media gear. So it was arranged to be in a UT networking room, at which point UT IT said they could not support it. So, the IT responsibility was added to Martin's media duties and the crazy IT experience began. The IT jobs turned out to be very helpful to Martin's Cortex and Phantom work down the line.

Martin continued monitoring law enforcement radio traffic over the past 50 years since his early police dispatching days. In February, 2017 Martin applied for and was admitted into the combined Bastrop County Sheriff's Department -Bastrop Police Department Joint Citizens Academy. He graduated on April 20,2017 and on June 9, 2017 completed his time to enable his accessing the Bastrop SO's COP car and other law enforcement resources.

In 2017, Martin missed being involved in law enforcement. He applied and was accepted into the joint Bastrop Police Department/ Bastrop Sheriff's Department's Joint Citizens Academy. After attending classes one night a week for 12 weeks, Martin Graduated.
