In 1983, some good friends Judy, Raleigh and Debbie took me to see the Texas Ska band Housewives' Choice at Austin's Liberty Lunch. They were incredibly talented and entertaining. As I got to know the band, James talked to me about their promotion. Bruce Newlin who was producing the Sounds of Austin magazine and I offered to manage Housewives' Choice. All participants were agreeable and we earned our first commission after the band played the Continental Club and took home under $10. They did much better with other gigs especially Frat parties. Some of the band graduated and moved away. The bass player Pat Washburn became our corporate attorney and is now a full partner in one of Austin's top law firms. James kept the music going and in the 1980's Chris and I ended up managing/marketing James for a period (which included his time as Marcia Ball's lead guitarist). James also produced recordings for one of our other artists, Tracie Lynn. The cuts were produced at Cedar Creek Studio with Fred Remmert and the backing of some of Marcia Ball's players. We evolved into video production and corporate entertainment and James evolved into one of the top Texas Blues musicians. We went to see him perform last Friday at Central Market South. Pat and Bruce also showed, so it was a great reunion. James plays all over Texas and beyond, so catch him when you can. Here's our brief You Tube clip. Tom Vernon recently toured our Museum as part of a story he's writing on vintage equipment. He agreed to sit down for an interview. Go to Tom Vernon's MOMSR interview.
More about Tom from the Telos web site: Tom Vernon's interest in electronics began in high school, when he joined an Explorer Post at a crystal plant in Carlisle, PA. He has worked in broadcasting for over 30 years, and is perhaps best known for his many articles in Radio World. Starting in 1983, Tom has written product reviews, features, how-to, and countless NAB articles. He was employed for a few years in the manufacturing end of the business, working as a wiring technician and customer service representative at Audio Accessories in Keene NH. Over the years he has performed engineering duties at a number of stations, including WNEV-TV, WBUR and Kiss-108 in Boston, as well as WXPN in Philadelphia. His hobbies include gardening, collecting vintage broadcast gear and vintage vinyl (over 3,000 albums and counting!), cardstock modeling and restoring his 19th-centurty house. Most recently, Tom has been taking flying lessons in a Piper Cherokee, and expects to soon have his private pilots license.
