Eulogy for Peter

Peter was a strong, kind and caring man. He was a good son, husband, father, grandfather and brother. He came from strong farming families both on his mother’s and his father’s side. The Miller family moved to England from Scotland in 1907. They first lived near Colchester, then purchased Tye Farm around 1911, Cuckoo Tye Farm in 1918 and eventually Clark’s Farm. Peter farmed all three farms from the age of 16 and later went on to purchase more land at Glemsford.

Farming was Peter’s life and he loved being outdoors and working long hours sowing, fertilizing, and harvesting the crops. He mostly grew wheat, barley and sugar beet. He was well known for his quality crops that brought him many accolades and certificates of recognition. The farm was mostly arable but also had some animals around too. Online, P J Miller farms is listed number 2 out of the 19 best farms around the Sudbury area, which is testament to Peter’s dedication to, and love of farming.

Peter’s first marriage was at the age of 22 and he and Lynn had two boys, Chris and Nick. Nick worked alongside his dad farming from the time he left school. Chris decided to pursue a different career of which his dad was proud.

Peter went on to marry Elaine and gained two stepsons, Daniel and Marcus. Along with his sons and stepsons, he had 7 wonderful grandchildren. Elaine and Peter enjoyed entertaining friends with fun barbecues and quiet dinners and enjoyed attending barn dances. They travelled quite a lot when Peter could pull himself away from the farm, including trips to Canada,Australia, cruises and several trips to the USA to visit his sister Christine and husband Martin in Austin, Texas. Christine has wonderful memories of this and their short reunion meet ups in Las Vegas and New Orleans.

Peter had an adventurous side, obtaining his private pilots license to become an intrepid flying farmer. He enjoyed flying his Cessna 172 and built his own landing strip at Cuckoo Tye.

Peter bought a 1943 World War jeep which he lovingly restored over the years. Peter and Elaine enjoyed their Summer rides out in it, stopping off at the local pubs where he w as well-known, and attending rallies.

Peter was a familiar smiling face at the farm machinery auctions.

In 2010, a bronze Roman lamp was discovered on one of the Miller Farms. This was quite a find, dating back to between 43AD and 300AD, only one of two intact lamps found throughout the world. Peter and Elaine very generously donated the lamp to Ipswich museum so it can be enjoyed for decades by museum visitors.

Peter will be missed so much by all who knew him, but he is now free to roam the fields in Heaven. Peter bravely fought his battle with Motor Neurone Disease until the end; a cruel diagnosis, particularly for someone who enjoyed such an active life. He will be remembered as a carefree, laid back person, who had a willingness to help friends and fellow farmers with any problems along the way.

God Bless Peter and thank you all for loving Peter and being here to say goodbye.

"I grew up at Cuckoo Tye Farm with my brother Peter Miller and my sister Sheila Miller (Albon). It was a very special place and Peter loved the farm and put his whole heart and soul into it. I miss both Peter and Sheila so very much. The bench is a very nice gesture from the Acton community and is much appreciated."
