Maybeth S. Searls was born Oct. 16, 1915, in Dallas, Texas. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas and, in 1937, graduated from Southern Methodist University with a degree in Education. She was an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Maybeth moved to Trindad, Texas, and taught school until 1939 when she met and married Dr. John P. Searls, who preceded her in death on April 4, 1981.

After moving to Marfa, Texas, in 1941, Maybeth worked at Fort D.A. Russell Army Base while also helping to establish and operate Searls Hospital. She was active in the Marfa Womenís Golf Association, the West Texas Womenís Golf Association, and the Marfa Ace-High Bridge Club. In 1991, she moved to Lubbock where she became an avid Texas Tech Red Raider supporter and a member of the Lubbock Bridge Center. Maybeth was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marfa.

Survivors include a son, James B. Searls of El Paso; a daughter, Susan Owens of Lubbock; eight grandchildren; and two-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, John P. Searls, Jr., on Jan. 4, 1976.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m., today, June 2, 2007, at the Marfa Cemetery in Marfa, Texas, under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors, 1901 Broadway, Lubbock, Texas.
