Dedication of the Camino Del Rio Tx Hwy 170

"While in Carl Williams' Air Explorer Squadron, quite a few of us assisted with the dedication of Highway 170 from Presidio to Terlingua called the "Camino del Rio." We were assigned various locations of interest along the road and were to describe the setting we were assigned to anyone who stopped to ask. I rode in with Fritz Weyerts (1943 - 2018) and we enjoyed a couple of amusing events. Driving into the sun from Presidio, Fritz missed the right turn and we went for awhile on the straight dirt road until we realized we'd run off the pavement. We lined up along the river road with Fritz at the Rock House; Jay Foster at the Anvil; I was at The Smugglers Trail; Robert Graham at Canyon Colorado; Lee McCollum was at Tapia Canyon and Ken Clouse was at Eagle Crack. All the dignitaries zoomed by us and no one ever stopped to ask about our positions on the road. As traffic diminished, several of us gathered closer together and just visited. In the evening Fritz picked us back up with the intent of going to Terlingua and back to Alpine. However his car could not make the long climb on the River Road, so back to Presidio and Marfa we went." Martin Theophlius
